Ordos Culture and History (1) Ordos: 'Heart of Mongolian culture'

A city surrounded by unique grasslands and deserts, Ordos in Inner Mongolia is hosting growing numbers of visitors as tourism plays an increasingly important role inits overall economy.

The city is ofpivotal importance to Mongolian people and interesting to tourists because itis home to the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan. Every year millions pay homage to oneof China's greatest heroes.

In addition tosignificant sites of Mongolian history, the region is also home to a stretch ofancient Great Wall and the Arzhai Grotto, an architectural complex of ancientBuddhist temples.

Tourists fond ofnature can visit the Gobi Desert, the Mu Us Desert, Sand Lake, oases,grasslands and the grand Yellow River gorges along the Inner Mongolia-Shanxiborder.

Ordos saw itstourism industry begin in 1984 when Moving Sand Bay resort and the Genghis KhanTomb opened to tourists.

With China'sreform and opening-up, the city has registered steady growth in the number ofboth domestic and international tourists over the past two decades.

In recent years,the Ordos city government has made great efforts to drive growth in the tourismindustry, including mapping out development policies and plans, acceleratinginfrastructure construction and attracting more investment.

The city now hasa full range of service facilities including 18 star-rated hotels and 30 travelagencies.

In 2007, Ordosattracted 4.38 million tourists from home and abroad, up 15 percent from theprevious year, and generated revenue of 3.89 billion yuan, an increase of 66percent over 2006.

Looking to thefuture, the city government has a new strategy to build an image as the"heart of Mongolian culture" and a destination with a unique nomadicflavor.

Tours willinclude those focused on Genghis Khan, travel packages to experience localgroups and customs, eco-tours of the region's deserts, grasslands, Yellow Rivergorges and visits to the city's booming industrial sites like cashmere plants,coal mines and natural gas fields.

After plans arein place, the local government expects the city will be one of the top tourismdestinations in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and even north China.
